I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move." - Robert Louis Stevenson It's springtime, which has brought us beautiful weather, flowers, and seasonal allergies. We have been very busy at the office, even planning trips all the way into 2017! This month's newsletter is going to focus on the extremely popular form of travel known as river cruising, give an overview of why travelers like it so much and what some of the different river cruise lines offer. Be sure to share pictures and stories from past trips or what you are excited to see on an upcoming trip. Share your stories here. Need inspiration for where to go next? Check out Virtuoso's Destinations page where you can virtually explore the world through an interactive map. Facebook Twitter Website Pinterest AmaWaterways' AmaLyra in Budapest River cruising has really exploded in popularity the last several years, thanks in large part to a company you may be familiar with called Viking River Cruises. So, why is it so popular? On a river cruise you are able to dock in the heart of the city; visit the most remote villages, towns and cities; and experience the culture of a place much more so than you do on an ocean cruise. But river cruises are like ocean cruises in the respect that you are in a floating hotel. No need to pack and unpack each time you are in a different city. For those who might be afraid of ocean cruising, river cruises are at a much more relaxed pace (meaning no seasickness) and you are almost always near land while you are sailing. Although the ships are more relaxed, they still offer luxurious amenities and exceptional service. While most associate river cruising with Europe, there are numerous other itineraries available throughout the world. You can sail down the Nile, Mekong, Amazon, and even the Mississippi. Themed river cruises are also very popular, particularly the Christmas markets in Germany and seeing the tulips in bloom in the Netherlands. Each line has something unique to offer and pricing is some degree of all-inclusive. Popular lines are: Viking, Scenic, AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Avalon Waterways. For more information on these or other river cruise lines, feel free to contact us at Landings Travel. Personal Experiences... Karan Cowden got to experience a Scenic River Cruise on Scenic Jewel from Nuremburg to Budapest in 2013. She thought the accommodations were great, and loved the GPS system, Tailormade, that Scenic gives each guest so that you can enjoy guided or self-guided tours wherever you are. Ashley Erickson went on Viking River Cruise's Magnificent Mekong in 2013 that went to Vietnam and Cambodia. During the trip she got to see the big cities in Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as some very tiny, rural villages that were so excited to see tourists and show where they lived. A highlight of the trip was obviously seeing Angkor Wat, but she really enjoyed experiencing the local markets and the Night Market in Phnom Penh is a must-see. Jon and Kathleen Sutter have sailed on AmaWaterways and are embarking on a Scenic River Cruise this month. They will be attending the christening of the brand new ship, Scenic Jasper, and sailing from Budapest to Vienna. Be sure to check Facebook for pictures and updates! *In the first version that was sent out this morning it incorrectly stated this was Jon & Kathleen's first river cruise. Also, they are actually sailing from Budapest to Vienna on their upcoming cruise. My apologies!* Landings Travel clients Mr. and Mrs. Darby enjoying their Scenic river cruise.
